Intelligent Portable Flue Gas Analyzer: Performance in Kiln and Heat Treatment Applications

Diagnosing Atmospheres with High Temperatures and High Dust Levels

In high-temperature industrial settings such as cement rotary kilns, steel heating furnaces, and aluminum smelting furnaces, the control of process atmospheres directly affects product quality and energy consumption. Field service engineers often face complex operational challenges: flue gas temperatures are consistently maintained at several hundred to over a thousand degrees Celsius, accompanied by high concentrations of dust and humidity, making it difficult for conventional testing equipment to operate stably over extended periods. The Intelligent Portable Flue Gas Analyzer was specifically developed for these harsh conditions and can continuously provide relatively accurate atmosphere data in high-temperature, high-dust, and high-humidity environments.

Whether it’s regulating oxygen content in cement kiln decomposition furnaces, monitoring protective atmospheres in steel heat treatment furnaces, or optimizing combustion during aluminum smelting, the monitoring logic is similar: capturing flue gas composition data that closely reflects actual conditions at the right location and at the right time. The intelligent portable flue gas analyzer simultaneously collects O₂ and CO data to assist in assessing excess air conditions inside the kiln. When oxygen levels are too high, excess heat is lost through the exhaust gases, driving up fuel costs. Conversely, low oxygen levels can lead to incomplete combustion, causing CO concentrations to rise rapidly. This not only wastes energy but may also disrupt the balance of a reducing or neutral atmosphere, indirectly causing product oxidation, surface defects, or even rendering the entire batch of products non-compliant.

With the implementation of the intelligent portable flue gas analyzer solution, the primary focus of control is on optimizing the air-fuel ratio and aligning it with the process rhythm.

For cement kiln systems, adjustments to the tertiary air distribution and decomposition furnace air supply can be made based on real-time O₂ data.

For zone-by-zone temperature control in steel heating furnaces, the actual combustion status of each burner must be assessed in conjunction with CO concentration.

Aluminum smelting furnaces are highly sensitive to changes in atmosphere; even trace oxygen deviations can exacerbate metal burn-off or cause hydrogen porosity.

In these scenarios, the intelligent portable flue gas analyzer not only enables direct sampling at the high-temperature end—thereby avoiding condensation losses and data delays caused by long gas transmission lines—but also rapidly feeds the collected data back to the control system, allowing engineers to promptly adjust fan speed, fuel valve positions, or flue gas recirculation ratios. It can also be paired with simultaneously measured flue gas temperature and pressure parameters to assist in evaluating trends in heat transfer efficiency and system resistance, providing data for the preventive maintenance of furnaces.

In such heavy-duty process industrial settings, the practical value of the intelligent portable flue gas analyzer lies in its ability to gradually shift operations—which previously relied on experience-based “fire monitoring”—toward precise control based on actual measurement data, thereby finding a repeatable and implementable balance between consistent quality and optimized energy consumption.
